The VAT formulas

Whatever the country, the maths is the same. With the rate as a percentage:

  • VAT to add = net price × rate ÷ 100
  • Price with VAT = net price × (1 + rate ÷ 100)
  • Price without VAT = gross price ÷ (1 + rate ÷ 100)
  • VAT inside a gross price = gross price × rate ÷ (100 + rate)

The most common mistake is taking the rate straight off a VAT-inclusive price. At 20%, 20% of 120 is 24, but the VAT in 120 is only 20.

VAT on your invoices

If you're registered, show the VAT separately on every invoice: the net amount, the rate, the VAT and the total. Our free invoice generator does this for you, with the rates and wording your country needs.

Questions people ask

›How do I add VAT to a price?

Multiply the price without VAT by the rate. At 20%, VAT on 100 is 100 × 0.20 = 20, so the total is 120. Or multiply by 1.2 in one step.

›How do I take VAT out of a price?

Divide the price including VAT by 1 plus the rate. At 20%, 120 ÷ 1.2 = 100 without VAT, so the VAT is 20. Don't just take 20% off 120: that gives 96, which is wrong.

›What's the VAT fraction?

It's the share of a VAT-inclusive price that is VAT. At 20% it's 1/6 (20 ÷ 120); at 5% it's 1/21. Multiplying a gross price by the fraction gives the VAT in it.

›Is GST the same as VAT?

They work the same way: a tax added at each stage of a sale, which registered businesses can usually claim back on their costs. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Singapore and India call it GST. Spanish- and Italian-speaking countries call it IVA, and France TVA.

›Does the US have VAT?

No. The US has state and local sales taxes instead, which are charged only on the final sale to the consumer. Rates vary by state, county and city.
