Invoice requirements in Switzerland

Checked 21 October 2026. General guidance, not tax advice.

Swiss invoices are short on formal rules, but VAT-registered businesses must show certain details so their customers can deduct input tax. Almost every Swiss invoice also carries a QR-bill payment slip, which replaced the old orange and red slips in 2022.

Our generator adds a valid QR-bill to the bottom of your PDF invoice: enter your IBAN (or QR-IBAN) and it's done.

What a VAT (MWST/TVA/IVA) invoice must show

  • Your name and place of business, and your UID number with the MWST/TVA/IVA suffix
  • The recipient's name and place of business
  • The date or period of the supply
  • The type, object and extent of the supply
  • The amount charged
  • The VAT rate and the VAT amount (if the price includes VAT, the rate is enough)

Reduced 2.6%MWST 2.6%

If you're not registered for VAT (MWST/TVA/IVA)

You usually have to register once your sales pass CHF 100,000 of worldwide turnover a year.

  • Businesses under CHF 100,000 of turnover are exempt from VAT: don't show a VAT number or charge VAT.
  • Never print a VAT amount if you're not registered: you'd owe it to the tax office.

Good to know

  • Simplified receipts are allowed for retail sales up to CHF 400, without the customer's name.
  • With a normal IBAN you can use a Creditor Reference (starting with RF) or no reference. A QR-IBAN needs a 27-digit QR reference, which our generator creates from your invoice number.
  • Since November 2025, QR-bills must use structured addresses (street, postcode and town in separate fields). Our generator does this for you.
