Invoice requirements in Austria

Checked 21 October 2026. General guidance, not tax advice.

Austrian invoices follow § 11 UStG. What's needed depends on the amount: up to €400 a simpler invoice is enough, above it your VAT ID must be shown, and above €10,000 your customer's VAT ID too.

If you're not registered for VAT (USt)

You usually have to register once your sales pass €55,000 of turnover a year (Kleinunternehmer rule).

  • Small businesses (Kleinunternehmer) with turnover up to €55,000 a year don't charge VAT.
  • Add a note such as "Umsatzsteuerfrei aufgrund der Kleinunternehmerregelung". Our generator adds it.

Good to know

  • Invoices to the federal government must be e-invoices through the USP portal.
